The Importance Of Mood boards

There are many ways that a person can portray their ideas when completing a project or a piece of work, one good example of a method to do this is a mood board.

Before explaining the significance of using mood boards, It is important to know what a mood board actually is. according to the Oxford Dictionary, a mood board is 'an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.'

Thinking more in depth into what a mood board is, it is where a person can display their thought process, ideas and initial schemes for a project they wish to complete, giving them a clear starting point for their project and giving them a clear visual of what they want to achieve.

A moodboard can consist of many different elements, these can include photos, colour schemes or pieces of texts that are relevant to the work that is going to be completed.

Different methods of layouts can also be used when creating a mood board. examples include scrapbooking or simply just laying out photos onto a piece of paper that you are inspired by. A mood board does not have to be complicated, in fact, the clearer it is to see your ideas, the more useful the mood board is going to be. Mood boards act as that bridge between your initial ideas and your first drafts, so making them clear can give you a better starting point.

Reasons why mood boards are important

One reason why mood boards are important are that they help you establish what the end result of your project can look like. This can be useful for personal use and also for client use, as it can give a clear vision as to what you are wishing to achieve. This can inspire other ideas, give motivation, and when used for working with clients, can give them a clear understanding of what you are wishing to achieve, making sure that both you and the client are on the same page. Also, mood boards can be useful if used by the client, as they can clearly show to the designer what they want visually, so that the designer can take inspiration and have a clear starting point.

Another reason why Mood boards are useful, is that they are a reminder to the designer of the original purpose and content they were going for, giving the designer motivation and a visual reminder of the work they are trying to complete. This can help the designer to not go off topic or go into a different direction that they did not originally intend to go to, making their work relate. Mood boards also include elements of the main project, giving you an opportunity to go through each element and include it into their work.

Another reason why Mood boards are important are that they are a great starting point for any project. They give you a direction to go to instead of staring at a blank page with no idea where to start for the project. They give you a basis to develop from which can cause less stress when trying to complete a project.

Overall, Moodboards are important as they are a great starting point, and a great way to visualise ideas to yourself and others, creating a much easier starting point for any task.
