FMP - urban subculture research

Updated: Jun 1, 2021

To create research on different subcultures, I first needed to identify and understand what urban subcultures are and why they exist.

From the research that I conducted, I found that urban subcultures or belonging to a social group is often about exploring who you are as a young person and what you stand for.

During adolescence, teenagers are striving to form their own singular identities, and a way of doing this is experimenting with identifying with different social groups to test out being someone 'new'.

Belonging to youth subcultures or social groups can also be a way for a young person to decide what they identify with as they grow up. It is a opportunity to experiment with new values.

Subcultures and social groups can present a set of guidelines to follow, such as how to behave, fashion and even how to think. Relating to people who are also thinking, behaving and dressing like them can help give a young person a sense of belonging and identity.
